Come to Longue Vue House & Gardens to experience the aesthetically captivating photography of Louisiana’s native Clarence John Laughlin, who lived from 1905-1985. This prolific artistic was famous for both of his architectural and surrealist-styled photographs of the Gulf Coast. Many historians credit Laughlin as being the first true surrealist photographer in the United States, and his impressive list of employers included Vogue Magazine and the U.S. Government. His connection to Longue Vue began during his lifetime, having used the house’s basement darkroom to print the final images for his most famous book, Ghosts along the Mississippi. This exhibit The Magic Spell of Memory will showcase many of these photographs beginning on May 20th and continuing through Fall 2011.
