The Historic New Orleans Collection is pleased to present an exhibition of cultural treasures that bring to life Louisiana’s past and present for the celebration of its 200th anniversary of statehood. “The 18th Star” displays an array of signature items from the holdings of HNOC to tell the stories that have defined Louisiana since its entry into the Union on April 30, 1812, as the eighteenth state. Its curators have carefully selected items that range from fundamental to quirky to best express the state’s background chronologically. Items will represent a variety of themes, such as history, politics, arts, literature, and social change. Featured items include a manuscript copy of the first Constitution for the State of Louisiana (from 1812), a can of drinking water distributed after Hurricane Katrina, and a photograph by Arthur P. Bedou from 1915 that depicts civil rights pinoneer Booker T. Washington addressing a crowd in Louisiana on his final visit to the state. Immerse yourself in Louisiana’s rich and diverse culture as the exhibition opens on August 30th and will be on display in the Williams Gallery until early winter, 2012.
